As you'll read in a hundred places, your home is likely to be the largest single expenditure you'll ever make in your life. Because of this, and because your home is the most important possession you will ever have for protecting yourself, your family, and your other possessions, it is critical that you buy a home that is safe, sound, and that makes you happy.
This can be a tall order. You'll find houses that are beautiful, but entirely in the wrong neighborhood. Or that are perfect, but more money than you can afford to spend. Or that you can afford, but about which you have serious doubts regarding the soundness of construction.
Can you trust the person you're buying the home from? No, they are trying to sell their house.
Can you trust the bank you get the mortgage from? No, they don't care about anything but money.
Can you even trust the real estate agent you have hired? No! They are not your friend; they are out for what is probably the only commission they'll ever get from you. Real estate agents have few repeat customers, and therefore need to get the biggest commission from you they can the one time they have you.
